My husband entered the James Cancer Center, Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio for a procedure, which would require an overnight stay. Two months later I took him home to die. He only lived a few days at home before his death.
It was not one error which took Michael's life, but a multitude of errors and neglect. His death was the most horrible barbaric death you can imagine. Mike was aware throughout the whole ordeal exactly what was happening to him. He did not slip into a coma until shortly before his death.
This was not surgery, but a "procedure." During this procedure they destroyed his gall bladder and let him lie, in horific pain, for 5 days until he was gangerious. Then decided to do an exploratory surgery, which we later found out was not necessary. They accidently severed his intestines in two places at this time. This went undetected for several weeks, until he was back on food and it started to spew from his incesion, which ran from his sternum to his pubic area.
They took Mike back into surgery, where they discovered that they had severed his intestine in two places with the previous surgery. By the time they acted on this latest problem, he was septic and had become so full of infection that he could not survive.
This is very brief, however, it transpired over a 2 month period of time. Which was two months of pure hell for Mike and his family. There were many other mistakes and a gross amount of neglect, which I have not even touched on.
It seemed like every day something else went wrong. I stayed at the hospital and slept in the room. I kept a daily journal and recorded the events of these 2 months. If I had not been there I would never believe that this could happen to a human being in the very hospital where he was to be healed.
Six months after Mike's death his sister died of medical error in an Arizona hospital.
